Means "against birth" from Greek αντι (anti) "against" and γονη (gone) "birth, offspring". In Greek legend Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. King Creon of Thebes declared that her slain brother Polynices was to remain unburied, a great dishonour. She disobeyed and gave him a proper burial, and for this she was sealed alive in a cave. Antigone originates in Greek language and means "against being mother". In Greek mythology, she was the daughter of King Oedipus, who killed his father and married his mother. The tragedy has been retold in numerous plays and books, the most famous being The Antigone by Sophocles. Nowadays, it is very unusual as a feminine given name.
