- Attila Meaning
- Means "little father" from Gothic atta "father" combined with a diminutive suffix. This was the name of a 5th-century leader of the Huns who invaded and ravaged Europe before finally being slowed down at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in Gaul. Attila was the name given to him by his Gothic-speaking subjects in Eastern Europe; his real name may have been Avithohol. Attila is a very common name in Hungary where it is given as a first name. “Atta” in Gothic means "father" and the suffix means "little", giving the meaning to the name. There are a number of versions of the name with the Hungarian version giving emphasis to the first syllable, while the American version gives emphasis to the second syllable. The most famous bearer of the name was “Attila the Hun”, a legendary warrior who almost brought the Roman Empire to its knees before he was slowed down.
