From the English word coral for the underwater skeletal deposits which can form reefs. It is ultimately derived (via Old French and Latin) from Greek κοραλλιον (korallion). Coral originates in Greek language and is probably taken from the word for a red or pink skeleton of marine coral, used for jewelry making. Some sources also suggest its Hebrew origin and the meaning "destiny". As a feminine given name it has never been overly popular in the United States.
