- Cordelia Meaning
- From Cordeilla, possibly a Celtic name of unknown meaning. According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Cordeilla was the youngest of the three daughters of King Lear and the only one to remain loyal to her father. When adapting the character for his play 'King Lear' (1606), Shakespeare altered the spelling to Cordelia. Cordelia probably originates in Celtic languages and the meaning is unclear. Some sources suggest, though, that it might originate in Latin language, meaning "heart". Cordelia of Britain was a legendary queen of the Britons and even though she is historically undocumented, she became an inspiration for Shakespeare"s character in King Lear.
