From the term that refers to the southern United States, used by Daniel D. Emmett in his song Dixie in 1859. The term may be derived from French dix "ten", which was printed on ten-dollar bills issued from a New Orleans bank. Dixie originates in French language and means "the tenth child". It is taken from the nickname for the Southern United States. There are several theories of where the expression came from, most likely it is derived from the currency issued by the banks of Louisiana. These were 10-dollar bills, with the French word dix (meaning "ten") on them and people called them simply "dixies". Later on, it became a popular feminine given name.
