From the name of the type of bird, also called the song thrush, ultimately derived from Old French. It was first used as a given name by the British author Marie Corelli, who used it for a character in her novel 'The Sorrows of Satan' (1895). The name Mavis orinates in Old French and it means "song thrush". Initially, it was used in the novel The Sorrows of Satan, written by Marie Corelli. Geoffrey Chaucer also used it in his Canterbury Tales. It was popular in the 1930s but nowadays it is rather old-fashioned.
