Variant of Nanuq. This was the (fictional) name of the subject of Robert Flaherty's documentary film 'Nanook of the North' (1922). Nanook originates in Native American languages and means "polar bear". In Inuit mythology, he was the master of bears. As a masculine given name it is very rare in the United States.
