Created by Shakespeare for a character in his play 'The Merchant of Venice' (1596). He possibly took it from Greek Νηρεις (Nereis) meaning "nymph, sea sprite", ultimately derived from the name of the Greek sea god Nereus, who supposedly fathered them. There are more possible explanations of the origin of this name. Most likely it was derived from Nereida, the Greek term for "sea nymph or mermaid". Another theory is that It was invented by William Shakespeare for his 1596 play The Merchant of Venice, where Nerissa was Portia"s maid and friend.
