Because she boasted that she was superior to Leto, Leto's children Apollo and Artemis killed her 14 children with poison arrows. In grief, Niobe was turned to stone by Zeus. Niobe originates in Greek mythology, but the meaning is unclear. She boasted of her 14 children and as a punishment for her pride, Apollo and Artemis killed all of these children using poisoned arrows. The story of Niobe and her sorrows has been mentioned on multiple occasions in literature. Recently, she was also a character in the Matrix series.
