From the English word Trinity, given in honour of the Christian belief that God has three states of being: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It has only been in use as a given name since the 20th century. Trinity originates in Latin language and means "triad". In English it mostly refers to the Holy Trinity, the Christian concept of God as three divine persons: the Father, The Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Due to its obvious religious reference, the name is popular with Spanish-speaking families. As a given name it has been used since the 20th century and was popularized by a character of the same name in the 1999 film The Matrix.
